Language Habilitation Through Writing Program

The APh (or Phaedrus Approach) is a therapeutic proposal aimed at working with people with AS (Autism Spectrum) or other complex neurodevelopmental problems, in particular when these people do not have language or their language  is very limited and / or is not functional (people with no speech or minimal speech).

Purpose

Autism Writing Program – focuses on language enablement through writing in people with autism or other complex neurodevelopmental conditions such as Autism Spectrum Disorders.

The patient / student is offered an encounter with writing in the spatiality of a computer keyboard or tablet that, with its letters at its disposal, facilitates the acquisition of writing.

The proposal consists of the presence of two therapists who provide, if necessary, motor modeling and emotional support. Motor modeling consists of helping you keep your index finger upright, achieving visual-motor coordination as well as sometimes initiating action, controlling impulsivity and perseverance. The supports are gradually withdrawn until the patient / student achieves independent writing, which has been achieved in the vast majority of treated cases.

To promote writing, we prioritize your interests and the information provided by your caregivers. The writing of ecological phrases or words is also encouraged. All this is linked to a meaning, adapting to the context and giving a meaning.

The frequency with which we work is of at least one weekly session of 30 to 45 minutes. The higher the frequency, the better the results.

Simultaneously with writing, the reading of written material is proposed.

We have observed that they begin to show an interest in the world that was apparently non-existent before. They begin to have a purpose of “understanding” and “making themselves understood”, “a meaning”, and after doing this journey, they can inaugurate, in the best of cases, the possibility of speaking.

The key: Strategy

The fundamental idea of the APh is to offer a therapeutic method that, based on a strategy and a technique, adapts to what patients need to improve their communication and written expression and that is also appropriate to their abilities, schedules and interests. That is to say, the strategy is to find a balance between their needs and their abilities and to offer them a technique to build on what they can already do and increase their ability to communicate and express themselves through writing.
